5 Ways to Be a Better Tourist

  1. Research the place you’re visiting beforehand

Read about a place’s history, culture, and people before you get there. It will help you form a deeper connection to the place.

2. Be Respectful

Don’t be an a**hole

This may seem obvious, but respect a place’s cultural traditions and practices— even if you don’t “believe” in them or if you think they are silly.

3. Be eco-conscious

Conserve natural resources like water and limit plastic use

Don’t waste precious water, and try to limit plastic use — it turns out that recycling plastic isn’t as great as Big Oil made it out to be.

4. Be Mindful of Fuel Use

Pick Trains, Bikes, and Walking over Cars and planes

You probably flew to your destination, so atone for your conspicuous fuel consumption by walking, biking, and taking trains when you can avoid cars and planes.

5. Consume Consciously

Buy local and support small businesses

Support the local economy and spend your money conscientiously — bonus points if the small businesses and restaurants that you support give to philanthropic causes and are owned by locals + natives + POC.
