The aesthetic is modern with a touch of old Hawaii nostalgia, and the level of thought and detail put into the rooms is impressive. I was especially delighted to see, as an amenity in the bathroom, a bottle of after-sun cooling gel just in case guests overdid it in the sunshine that day.

We booked an ocean golf-view room that was on the second floor (not knowing to request a ground-floor room with an outdoor lava shower). We had a gorgeous view of the sunset, but we were a little ways away from the main action (pools and restaurants) of the hotel.

The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai boasts 7 pools — including one of my daughter’s favorite kiddie pools ever — a championship golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, a tennis court, and a beautiful spa and fitness center. It also has a cultural center where guests can learn more about the history of the Hawaiian islands and its indigenous people under the guidance of a cultural expert, learn lei making and get an introduction to hula dancing.

The hotel is arranged in clusters that are quite spread out, giving the resort a very private feeling even when at full occupancy. You can call and ask for golf cart pick up and drop off anywhere on the resort if you don’t feel like walking. Each cluster has its own self-serve complimentary washer and dryer facilities - so great for families!

Dining at Hualalai

Dining options include Beach Tree, an al fresco casual option; Hualalai Grille, a traditional American steak house with island influences; Ulu Ocean Grille, a seafood restaurant and sushi bar; and Hualalai Trading Company, for grab-and-go options, coffee, and a nostalgic soda bar.

Special Programs and Amenities for the Keiki (Kids)

They seriously thought of everything for babies and kids.

They seriously thought of everything for babies and kids.

Kids 4 and under eat for free (conditions apply), and the resort has a complimentary kids program — Kids for All Seasons — specially designed for children 5-12. The program includes arts and crafts, outdoor sports, and more - and runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. There is also a kids’ game and activity center called Hale Kula, which features an entertainment system, video game stations, and a grassy area for outdoor games.

Babysitting by trained childcare providers is available for an additional charge.

Children’s amenities include child-sized bathrobes, childproofing items, a special welcome amenity and milk and cookies the evening of arrival, complimentary baby and kids’ toiletries, swim diapers, complimentary use of a children’s video library and beach toys, and a crib and/or rollaway bed.

You can even request high chairs, changing tables, bottle warmers, bathtub seats, potty training seats, step stools, furniture bumpers, bed rails, vaporizers, baby bathtubs, a nursing pillow, and lanai netting! They’ve truly thought of everything. So impressed.

Resort Location

Upon arrival at KOA (Kona International Airport), you will be greeted by Four Seasons staff, who will assist you with your luggage and escort you to your pre-arranged transportation to the resort (costs vary, and I will help you arrange this). It is about a 15-minute drive to/from the airport, making it the closest resort on the Kohala Coast to KOA airport.
