Copenhagen has a ton of great stores with well-made, high-quality goods — but it helps to know where to look! Here, a guide to my favorite finds:

Best Kids Stores in Copenhagen

purebaby stocks organic clothing for mom and baby + toys + nursery items. I would have gone nuts buying everything if I were expecting - everything was so cute and well-made. We ended buying some wooden stacking toys for Jules and for friends’ babies as gifts. Everything was on the more expensive side, but it was all made in Europe and seemed to be really great quality. Barnlil’ is an adorable boutique with the cutest clothes and nursery toys for babies and kids. We got Jules the softest organic cat-print onesie (I spent an embarrassing amount on it) and a striped, ruffled sweater that is perfect for our upcoming winter trip to Japan. Barnlil also has books, toys, and the cutest shoes for babies and kids. Barnlil’, Smallegade 34, 2000 Frederiksberg, Denmark. Closed Sundays.

Børnenes Butik på Strøget has the cutest baby and kid toys and is located in one of Copenhagen’s best shopping areas. They have a whole wall of Maileg toys: stuffed mice and rabbits with adorable accessories like strollers, suitcases, and even circus tents. “Soooo cute!” as my toddler likes to say. Check out Småfolk for organic Danish cotton kids’ clothing with cute prints (reminiscent of my beloved Hanna Anderssen); plus a large selection of European made nursery/baby stuff and and kids’ toys. Småfolk, Gammel Kongevej 99, 1850 Frederiksberg, Denmark.

Visit Bornenes Boghande bookstore to pick up a fairytale or two. We bought Jules a board book version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling and she loves it. We visited the location at Kobmagergade 50, which had a small selection of English-language books, but I’d recommend checking out the location at Skindergade 2, which touts itself as Copenhagen’s oldest children’s bookstore and is sure to have a greater selection.

Best Stores for Fun, Affordable Gifts - Flying Tiger and Sostrene Grene

Copenhagen (like the rest of Scandinavia) is almost unbelievably expensive to an American who is used to Target prices. Luckily, fun and affordable tchotchkes and souvenirs can be found in abundance at Flying Tiger and Søstrene Grene. It’s Both stores are set up like mazes with one entrance and one exit and a thousand things to buy in-between. Flying Tiger is more kitschy and Sostrene Grene more cute. My Favorite Store in Copenhagen - Illums Bolighus

Illums Bolighus - This massive department store has everything you could possibly be looking for — I could have spent hours in here! There’s clothing and makeup of course, but there’s also a huge selection of beautiful Danish homewares; souvenirs; and Nordic children’s clothing, furniture, and toys. We got Jules a Little Mermaid carousel music box here — so cute! Illums Bolighus, Amagertorv 10, 1160 København K.
