Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo: Luxury Accommodations and Five-Star Service in the Tallest Building in Tokyo

The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo is located in Akasaka/Roppongi (depending on the cab driver you get) - and like many other modern Tokyo hotels, is located on the top floors of a multi-use skyscraper. The lower floors of the Ritz-Carlton are occupied by residences, businesses, shops (including Dean & Deluca), the Tokyo Midtown mall with a Muji and a UNIQLO, and below that, a subway station. If you wanted to you could never leave the building and be perfectly well-fed and well-dressed for a month. (I’m joking, but also totally not joking).

The hotel occupies floors 45-53 of the building and comes with gorgeous windows to show off their beautiful views. Depending on which way your room faces, you can have views of Tokyo Tower, Tokyo SkyTree, or — on a clear day — beautiful, iconic Mount Fuji in the distance.

Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo is a member of Marriott STARS and Virtuoso, so I can get you upgrades and extras through either of these programs.

the Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo is a Marriott STARS Hotel

There are 245 rooms in the Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo. The base-level room is a “Deluxe” room and is 52 square meters large - about 560 square feet, and more than double the “average” size of a Tokyo hotel room.

All rooms come with beautiful views of the Tokyo skyline, Nespresso machines and tea service, a large all-marble bathroom with a soaking tub.

We were super lucky to be upgraded to a Millenia Suite, which at 80 square meters (861 square feet) was more than roomy enough for our multi-generational trip (my mom came too).

Note: Flights to Tokyo from Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines depart Honolulu in the afternoon and land in Tokyo at night, so after going through immigration and customs and taking a 60+ minute ride in from Narita Airport, we invariably check in late to whatever hotel we are staying at. This time was no different, so my initial (fresh and clean) room photos are all kind of dark, so “sumimasen!” Sumimasen means “I’m sorry” in Japanese and you’ll hear it a lot while traveling in Japan: you can use it equally to get someone’s attention or to apologize for getting in their way. Or for taking dark photos for your blog.

Club Level Access

I highly HIGHLY recommend staying in a Club Level room — the clientele is super exclusive, the view is amazing, and the service is outstanding. Most suite guests receive club access, or you can book a Club Tower Deluxe or Club Deluxe room to receive club access. The club lounge was just renovated in 2018 and is the largest in Tokyo (which may be why it never felt overcrowded).

Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo Hotel Amenities

Some special hotel amenities include:

  • a spa (run by ESPA)

  • a lap pool (for swimming rather than playing: children must be accompanied by an adult and be over 4 years of age)

  • 24-hour gym

  • Azure 45: a French and Japanese Michelin-starred restaurant on the 45th floor of the hotel. It has a private room with spectacular views of Tokyo Tower that is just perfect for a small party or an engagement.

  • Tons of Japanese whisky for the whisky aficionado. The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo bar stocks over 150 kinds of whisky including several private labels. They can also help you find specific Hibiki years if you’re looking for them.

  • Afternoon tea in the Lobby Lounge (also available in the Club Lounge for club level guests).

Special considerations for families include:

  • Lots of possibilities for adjoining rooms. For example, an executive suite can connect to another suite or to a standard room. (See below for a great family promotion running through the end of 2020).

  • Ritz-Carlton Kidz: a special check-in area for children. A Ritz-Kids tent can be placed in your room for a safe and fun “camping” experience for your child.
